Some Parting Shots

It's a beautiful sunny day here in Baku. The temperature is in the low teens and there isn't any wind. A perfect day for picture taking, but John and Ali are too busy right now to go out wandering. I am hoping they get here at least a couple of hours before the sun goes down, I've been waiting for a day like this to get some pictures I've been thinking about for a long time.

In the meantime, I'll post some pix I took over the past couple of weeks...nothing spectacular, just a few random shots taken on the way to somewhere.

These are the puppies that belong to our landlord. Their mother is White Dog....we used to call her the mangy cur but she turned out to be a very nice dog and mangy cur didn't seem to fit anymore.

These pups, one male and two females, are the remains of a litter of five that were born at the end of November. Sometimes they live in the courtyard next door but more often than not, they live on our road. The older kids, on the street, take bags of garbage out of our bin and set them in the gutter so the pups (and probably the rest of the neighborhood's dogs) can find a meal.

I think they are darn cute puppies, these wily little rascals, and I wish the landlord would find homes for them.

Lots of good eats to come this weekend, gang. We're moving and I've got a freezer half full of beef.

So long Citi Mart....home of imported groceries in Baku.

I hope you get the pancake mix back in again soon. I'm sure others miss it like we did. You can charge twelve bucks for the box, if ten wasn't enough....just please get the Aunt Jemimah back on the shelves for the ones we leave behind.

This is the human parking meter moving his marker out of the way, so Ali can park in front of the store. He saves the spots and loads the groceries into the car....for the equivalent of 50 cents. Just down the street you can see the Unibank ATM. Here, John performs his weekly ritual before we get groceries. If you overdraw it doubles as a guillotine.

In Baku, he has become the one who handles the money because my legs can't get my get me up on that ledge with a shred of dignity intact.

A few shots from Fountain Square.

The cute little FOTO monkey.

McDonald's in the background.

Walking to Hong Kong Store on Easter Sunday......I call this one "A Whole Bunch of Guys & Some White Chick".

And Easter Colors...

The nicely refurbished literature museum.

The not so nice Airport bazaar, much of which closed this week. We went last Saturday for our quarterly allotment of concentrated car exhaust. Shame on me for wimping/choking out after only a few blocks and one purchase. No pashminas for me!

But I can haz chicken food...not only all week but it looks like all night, too.

And last but not least Kenai's favorite store. Ahmed's Soccer Ball and Other Odds & Ends Emporium.

He so happy, he's starting to look like a Great Dane already!

Karen - I see you are on the move again. Copenhagen? Clay will really be impressed the next time he asks "who came the farthest". What an interesting life you lead. And your doggie is gorgeous. Are you settled yet? Hope to see you on the CH pages soon.

Well, no Cinda, not settled yet. I took Kenai to the boarding place last week here in Nova Scotia, and in a couple of weeks I'm flying to Copenhagen to meet John. I'll believe it when I see it, but the guy who is shipping our stuff said it would be there in two weeks. If that's the case, I'll be settled pretty soon after I get over there. Great to here from you!

Karen - I just went to Copenhagen on Google Earth and all I can say is wow. Beautiful place. Any idea how long you will be there? Are you glad to be gone from Azerbijan or however you spell it? And how frigging cold does it get up there?

We are supposed to be there for two years, but that can always change. I could have handled another year in Baku, I think. It felt like we had just settled in to life there and we had to leave. I don't think Copenhagen gets particularly cold, but it does have 4 definite seasons and snow in the winter. I do know that when I was there at the end of March/beginning of April, it was warmer there than it is here now. I have been looking at long North Face coats on line though.
